Oracle upgrades have certainly become more technically demanding with each release, requiring increasing levels of technical expertise and involvement. At specific stages in the 11i upgrade process OneAPPS involves at least two good experienced Applications DBA's involved. This is particularly useful - as the live upgrade will almost require a 24-hour continuous shift pattern. In addition to the DBAs, the three other equally important specialized skill sets that OneAPPS team comprises is Oracle Applications functional consultants, system architects, and developers.

Each group will play a critical part in the upgrade process. The size of the team will depend on how many and which Applications modules have been implemented, how customized the system is and whether or not a clear upgrade path exists - some modules such as HR, CRM and Manufacturing require more work than others. The more modules the bigger the functional team required and the more specialized skills are likely to be needed. The number and type of developers chosen will also dependon the extent of customization in forms, reports, batch programs and interfaces. The more customizations there are the more developer resources and time will be required. Certainly any previously existing customizations that have not been replaced by new functionality will have to be redeveloped and tested.

A typical upgrade team for a medium sized blue chip company will comprise one project manager, three functional consultants, two DBAs, one to three developers and four key users.
